Clanging sound on hard left hand turn

I was riding the twisties in WV and entering a hard, downhill, left hand turn, to uphill compression I heard a loud metalic clang. At first I thought I hit a rock that hit my underside. I was riding at a good sporting pace, learning the extreme capabilities of my new favorite steed. But it happened again in another hard left turn. I checked out the parts that could grind the road no marks on pegs etc. I am new to this 2002 RR and am puzzled. If I had been on my MG LM1 I would have thought it was the center stand bouncing. Does this happen on our RR bikes also?

Our center stand does hit..and more on the left handers..and more when you hit a dip mid corner..and more if you're a heavey guy.. :D

I wind up my rear pre-load up to full stiffness..or one click back..don't worry about it..a little scrape every now and then wont hurt.

Have you messed with the rebound setting at all? I'm afraid to start messing with the suspension, as I know it will be like tunning valves, you're never satisfied.

Mine will do the same thing but only if my wife is on the back. I can crank in all the preload on the rear and no more problem. First time it happened she asked me "Do I need to lose some weight?"

I told her emphatically NO! (She's not a little girl) But she has it all in just the right places! I will put up with a little parts draggin'.

I am only 165 lbs, I only ride solo. I guess I'll crank up the rear shock. Should I also crank up the front, just to keep it equal? Or do these shocks go lame at 24,000 miles, like most factory ones? Gosh I hope I don't have to buy Ohlins . :roll:

I've had this same thing happen when hitting a bump in mid-turn. I had the rear preload backed way off and it just bottomed out. I have also read here that there's a problem with air in the remote adjuster that may have you believing you are making preload adjustments when in fact it is not changing anything. (at least at the low end)

Yes, there is a flat head for a screwdriver on the front shock.

If the suspension is set soft, you can bottom out on this bike.

I did it the first month I had it. Even blew the seal on the front shock on a railrod crossing. The dealer set it up for a 180lb rider, and I am far from that!

If you are hitting the center stand in turns, tighten up the suspension.
I think the bike just rides better tight anyway.

A clang or a scrape.

Seems to me you'd know if it was a scrape, they're hard to ignore. A clang is a different sound entirely.

I have no idea what would cause a clang.

the adjustment screw up front only adjusts the rebound speed. it does nothing to the spring.
I was dreaming when I wrote this, forgive me if it goes astray...

learned something interesting this weekend as well... on the right side under hard cornering, if you grind the peg feeler half-way off you also start grinding the plastic cylinder head protector option. yikes.

this bike requires a lot more body steering than i'm used to. guess i'll have to alter my riding style a bit, heh.

I'm only 150 lbs and I crank the rear preload to mid position. With gear or a passenger I crank it all the way up. I set the rebound adjusters to halfway. I find the firmer ride better. The bike handles the curves better too.
If you're going to be riding very aggressively I suggest getting your butt off the center of the saddle. You can keep the bike more upright and maintain a larger tire contact patch with the road. Which means a safer ride and will allow you to go a little faster.
