Hot in the city.

Post by DJ Downunder »

It's a hot day in Melbourne..34deg today...and it's only the 5th day of Summer down under... :D

One way to survive this heat is to cool off at the beach...this is Brighton beach..it's one of Melbourne's city beaches.

Sorry my pics are now gone...(by me)...to make room for more.

You just had to do that....

It's a balmy winter morning here in IL, I have 5F (-15C) and earlier in the night we had 20mph winds too. Gotta love it!

I don't know where Melbourne is latitudinally, whats your winter season like?

BTW, the black screen looks great, and the color looks dead on!

Our Winter can get pretty bad...I once even had to turn my heated grips on.. :D ...it sometimes drops below 10deg C..whatever that is in F.. :?

Thanks re the black fly screen..I don't need anything bigger...and it's soooo quiet.

DJ, nice shots as always, and the bike looks great.
It isn't even winter here and it is now -2 C in New Jersey at the moment.

Here are a few pics of our Brighton Beach (Brooklyn).

Hey DJ, for the record, I'd rather be in YOUR Brighton Beach than OUR Brighton Beach.

The sign says (in my best phony Russkie accent):

"Strong Leg, Good for Plow" :D :D :D :D

My Russian has gotten crappier since I don't travel there regularly anymore, but the one word I can read is "Pierogi" on that sign. Looks like a snack stand. I can't tell what the 50 Cents is for.

Seriously, BB is a major Russian enclave in the NY area, sort of like Chinatown. It is very common to see signs in the Cyrillic alphabet.
All the comforts of Mother Russia can be found there.

BTW the temp here in NJ is up to +2 C. Woo Hoo !!

DJ - what are those multi-colored huts? Are they dressing rooms for the public? They look too small to be homes. Sure are colorful!

Them's the Brighton Bathing Boxes! Famous. Never been, but we have similar here in Yorkshire on the East coast which you can rent for the season for not a lot so you have somewhere to get changed or go for a brew when it rains... :?

Chris is right...they are bathing boxes...and very old...a good mate of mine has the blue and yellow one in the center of that pic.

There are about 30 different beaches around Melbourne and this is the only beach that has them...I'm not sure what the story behind them is.

Tony...I'm very surprised that you have Russian signs like that in the US..you learn something every day.. :D

DJ, going back to the original topic, hot weather down under, I have been meaning to inquire if after celebrating Christmas during the hot season for so many years do Aussies have a different outlook about some of the common symbols associated with Christmas? ie Snow Men, Sleighs, snow, etc.

Phil...as odd as it all seems...we still have Santa and reindeers...even snow men..all that normal Christmas stuff..even thought it's stinkin' hot.

I sometimes feel sorry for the poor Santa's wearing all that gear and trying to look cool.

Phil,

whilst many go for the roast turkey and all cooked veges etc, it's almost as common to do a big spread of seafood and salads.

Egg nog is almost unheard of. Beer rules.:) , followed by a decent chardy.

A day swimming or picnicing verses snowmen and snowballs.

The shops all seem to have reindeers and snow everywhere though, so maybe they're from the northern hemisphere.

DJ, Rub it in!!!! On my walk the other day I happen to have my camera, as I wanted to get a picture of the skaters as they came thru the Channel, The lakes are just iceing up and it makes for great skating and Ice boating, as it gets thicker they hold MC races on some of the smaller lakes, nothing great, but fun, I could not help but think of your post, Den

Good Aye, Mate!

I see you still got it...hot bike, cool breeze and a tasty brew to wet the whistle.

Makes me wish I still had my R...

Well, we've had rain!

Just enough to allow the fire fighters a rest for Christmas.:)

Rain is predicted for Christmas day, and 16C -18C is predicted...and snow even on the mountain tops that were in danger of going up in flames just yesterday arvo'. :D

It's a strange world we're livin' in.

Even stranger, one of those bathing boxes on Brighton's Dendy beach sold for OZ$188K last week. :o
Cheers...and stay horizontal!
