Magnetic Tank Bag Preferences and West Bank Riding

I'm looking to buy a magnetic tank bag for my '04 r1150r online. Anyone have a preference?

I really like my Marsee teardrop magnetic bag. That sucker stays put! And it doesn't seem to mar the tank finish too much. Wax just polishes it out where the rubber nib-dub-dib-nubs set on the tank. You gotta check for metallic objects sticking to the underside each time you place it on the bike though. That would ruin your day if you got a tiny screw up under there.

I don't want to hijack the thread but I'm trying to locate just a clear map holder that's magnetically attached to the tank. If anybody has a line on one of those, I'd appreciate it.

I have the Marsee teardrop and it doesn't move a bit. I look right past it and it does not intrude on my field of vision of guages. Easy enough to slide to the side for gas.

It has left some minor sratches on my tank...probably more from my own neglect of not making sure the magnents and tank are clean from dust before putting it on. On long distance it holds all my autocom stuff, Ipod, walkie talkie etc. Mine came with a very compact wallet that I use and has lots of nifty pockets. It can expand aprox 2" taller if I need a little more space but I prefer it low.

Easy to snap off and take with into a cafe etc.
I think it retails for about 125.00 (can't remember as it was a gift).... A&S just had one on sale for 75.00 off.

I had a Marsee tear drop also (almost the official tank bag of the 1150R I think!

) but changed to a Held magnetic. Marsee did not offer a rain cover to fit the tear drop and I liked some of the neat features of the Held.

All the advice about magnetic bags still holds. Keep the underside relatively clean and you should have no worries. And they don't move!

I've got the Tour Master Cortech mini that's magnetic and is very useful until I fill it up, then it's too heavy for the curves and wants to slip off. Great for short trips, lunch, etc.

Also have a BMW bag that I found used for those rides where I really load up.

You got hosed. Mine came with the rain cover. Standard equipment, according to product descriptions from the company.

If I got hosed, it was by Marsee themselves! We contacted them directly and they said no raincover was made to fit my tankbag, however recommended one for another model. It fit horribly and I refused to buy it. Just put everything that could be damaged in zip locks until I found something I liked.

I still like the Held better!

Bad Marsee! Bad! Bad!

Maybe we had different tankbag models. The raincover for mine doesn't fit as tight as I would want, but I suspect that's an inevitable result of having an expandable bag--tough to get a perfect fit on a bag that won't stay the same size. Held makes great products, although I certainly have no complaints about the Marsee's quality and design. For that matter, the Eureka and Tourmaster Cortech soft luggage I've owned have been outstanding as well. This isn't rocket science and the bar has been set pretty high in this area for years. Tough to even find bad soft luggage these days.

Are you sure you want a magnetic tank bag?
I have one of these, and love it. The bag doesn't even touch the tank, so no worries about scratching it, ever.
Works great, very secure, quality materials, a raincover that works, good styling, etc....
I also have the optional GPS holder for my Streetpilot 2820, that also works great. Puts the GPS in a great place for viewing IMO.

I like my Nelson Rigg, but always to remember to lift it straight up.

I think that Roadgear makes one.

BMW of Santa Cruz carries the Wunderlich map pouch. I just bought one myself.

I've got an Oxford humpback tank bag, which is magnetic. Can't fault the quality, it's expandable and it doubles up as a backpack, leaving just a map pocket on the tank.
I love my tank bag, I've been attached to it since the day I bought it 3 years ago, but now I'm faced with possibly needing a new one.

Reason being I'm about to do 2 months touring round Europe, and the oxford isn't very comfortable as a backpack for walking around all day. Mainly because it doesn't hang evenly on my back, the top part isn't touching my back at all, so all the weight is pressing against a single spot lower down.

I'm tempted to try the Oxford sport tankbag. It's got all the same good points as mine, but it's bigger and looks more like it'll make a good backpack as it's pretty much square.

I was wondering if anyone knows if BMW do anything worth looking at?

Here's a pict of my Oxford Humpback magnetic bag. I got mine in silver to match the bike, but other colors are available: (I can't seem to get picts to display, so I'll have to post links)

I've had mine for about three years, and have no complaints whatsoever. Unlike Jonny_L I don't try to use mine as a backpack. If I did I would unzip the magnetic base and either leave it on the bike or stash it away in my system cases; no point in lugging those heavy magnets around. I have used the shoulder strap to sling it over my shoulder and carry it in and out of a hotel - again, no problems for me.

I went for the Marsee Corona...here is some ad copy: The new magnetic Corona Tankbag offers a tankbag that almost "hovers above" the tank so there is minimal contact between bag and motorcycle tank
Simple to attach - (metal) Corona ring attaches to gas cap and locks tankbag into place, release allows it to unlock
Tankbag has an internal molded plastic base for rigidity

I vote for the Marsee Corona. Has a magnetic ring that attaches to the tank filler ring. It mates bayonet fashion to the bottom of the bag. Nothing comes close to the paint. Very well made and secure. Comes with a rain cover.
