Driving Lights

Post by jlr12r »

Hi just purchased a new r1200r and expect delivery some time next week.
Looking for recomondations for adding driving lights on a non ABS model. Does BMW specify a maximum load that the battery/alternator can support for all accessories including lights?

Thanks

Maximum load for the 12V outlet is 5amps total. That's 60W.

I had the Moto Lights installed when I picked up mine a couple of weeks ago. The R1200R has a 600watt alternator, so you should be ok. :)

I wanted to post some photos of the Moto Lights but didn't see any way to do it. I checked the FAQs and saw that I couldn't post images directly from my pc to the forum. :( Anyone have any suggestions?? Thanks..

Bill, thanks for the email with the pics. The lights look great!
As far as I know you have to host the images at a separate site. If you have the time you may want to try http://imageshack.us/ I haven't used the service but see that some other members do. I would think its pretty straight fwd.

Hey Bill,

I'm interested in driving lights. Would you send your pics of the Moto lights?

I would be glad to send pics of the lights. However, I'm away from home until the 29th, but I'll send them as soon as I get back. I must say this is the 2nd set of MotoLights I've had and I like them a lot. If you have any other questions, just drop me an email.

Can anyone comment on the long-term reliability of the Moto Lights?

I have a set of Lazer Stars on my other bike, and they seem well made, but I can count on replacing the lamps once a season and the sockets about every other year.

I think both lights use the same kind of MR-16 lamps, and I'm wondering if they both have the same problems.

Neil,
I don't remember what the MotoLights people say, but I went two years without replacing them on my 04 RT. So when I got rid of the RT I had a new set of the Moto's installed on the R1200R. If you go to their web site I think you may find a life expectancy of the bulbs and if I remember correctly, it seems like a fairly long time. Hope this helps.

I also have the MotoLights. I have had the same set on 4 different bikes. After putting them on the R1200R I switched from 35w to 50w bulbs and noticed alot of oxydation on the old 35w bulbs but figured it was because they were 8 or 9 years old. After about 2000 miles on the new 50w bulbs I noticed some condensation on the inside of one of the lenses. After closer inspection, I found the reflector completely cracked away from the bulb and cracked in half. Still held together by the white silicon ring around the outer lip of the lamp. And it was still working and continued another 2000 before I could get it changed. These lamps are tough. I did notice my old friend Mr. Oxydation on both of the lamp reflectors. I believe these lamps produce so much heat that it is very hard if not impossible to stop them from drawing moisture inside the housing. I am now trying a 50w GE Edison bulb with a sealed reflector and would be impossible for water to get to it. They look good, are brighter, have a wider pattern and will let you know if I encounter any problems.

See you on the road.
