To my RR friends and well wishers... new bike

Post by munchmeister »

To all of my friends on this Board, I just wanted to tell you I got a new bike, after my rather serious crash just about a year ago (April 29, 2007 to be exact). Many of you sent your prayers, good vibes and get well wishes, which were much appreciated. I got healed up and started surfing on ADVrider's Flea Market pages (I knew better  ) and found this beauty. Went to Dallas on April 11 and made the deal and rode 'er home.

2002 R1150GS, ABS, heated grips, bar risers, H&B headlight guard, head protectors, throttlemeister and, best of all, those cavernous Jesse side cases. They're HUGE... could fit a small child in those things. The ride home was uneventful, except for that West Texas Wind (GypsyRR, you didn't tell me about that part of Texas) and the motorcyclists on the road were, as always, friendly folk. Coming down off Raton Pass, I stopped for a stretch and 3 riders came up just to admire my new bike. They had just come from Baja. The guy on the R1200GS took my photo before he got his gloves on and went his merry way. BTW, the 3 wives followed in Suburban... all the way from Baja. They were all smiles.

On Raton Pass, fully ensconced in "ATGATT." (Makes me look like a blimp :P )

Good to be back on the world renowned boxer twin.

Thanks, again, everybody.

Good to see you with a new bike, Doug! That's a great looking, clean bike for a 2002. We expect many more trip reports and photos from you now. :D

Good for you, Doug!!! Nice bike too. How was it getting back on a bike after that crash/burn you had last year? How long did it take before you knew you wanted to ride again?

Sorry about those West Texas winds. I don't visit west Texas very often, so I wouldn't have known to warn you. I hope you were listening to Robert Earl Keen when up on Raton. (he's the only one I can think of right now who has a song about Raton).

Take care - and post some ride reports. I'm going to be in Colorado by the end of May. Post some reports on roads I need to travel once I get there!!

Congratulations and sharp bike!

Glad you are healed up again although I will admit I don't remember much about your accident, I guess you posted details but I have CRS in a bad way and just don't recall.

I can identify with recovering and getting back on the bike. I have had two m/c accidents since 11/07, 1st one totaled the bike but I walked (limped) away from. Wasn't so fortunate the second time about 3 months ago but recovering well and started riding again about a month ago. I keep a cane strapped to the back!

I'm sure you will have much fun on your new machine!

Here's the initial link Doug posted about his accident last year. It's a pretty remarkable recovery considering all he went through. Worth reading again and a reminder to all of us how quickly life can change.
