Hepco-Becker Tail Rack Install, help!

Post by MattPie »

I just bought the Hepco-Becker rack, and I'm hoping someone can help me out.

I bought the BMW side-rails awhile back, but I've never had the BMW rack. From what my pidgin German and Google tells me, I need to have the 'original' screws to mount the rack to the BMW handles. I know I didn't get any screws with it, so that's all I can think of.

Can anyone confirm this, and if so, anyone have a part number for the BMW screw kit (or a size I can get form the hardware store)?

The second question is about the mounting. I found screws that were about the right size and test-fit the rack just getting the nuts hand tight. The rack seems like it's too narrow for the rails by 1/4" or more on each side. Are there spacers involved or do I just torque it down? I'm a little worried about breaking the plastic rails.

I have the same setup. There are no spacers. The screws came from the stock (optional) rack. I really don't remember if there was a gap between the rails and the rack, but I say tighten those screws.

I got a pair of their engine crash bars and had to deal with German instructions. I found this site to be helpful:

04 46547654763 fillister head screw(M8X40)BUY 2 $3.00 (front rail)
05 31422310341 flat washer BUY 2 $0.75

06 07129903329 screw (M6X25) BUY 4 $4.00 (top rack)

07 52537686463 badge (D=27MM) BUY 1 $8.00
08 46547655724 plug BUY 4 $2.00
08 46547655725 cap BUY 4 $2.00

You need part #6. Check, if you can for fine vs medium vs coarse threads. I believe it is 1.25 threads you need. But it might be 1.00 threads.

The slight offset of the rails to the rack is not a problem. Simply loosen the rear frame bolts slightly, then fit everything loosely, then tighten everything evenly (to frame and rack at same time).

Yeah, I posted that before realizing it was on the Rockster board. I wasn't sure how much traffic there was over there, so I posted to the main section as well. My bad.

I'm thinking of putting the Hepco topcase on my wife's 1150R. How does it look? Anybody have any pictures of the R with the Hepco topcase?

Thanks! It certainly looks a lot better than most of the Givi top cases. I'm sold.
