Sport Shield Install

Post by artattack »

I just bought a used BMW sport shield.

I don't have instructions and I can't figure out where exactly the brackets mount. I think I have the top ones figured out, but the lowers don't seem to have anywhere to go.

If anyone has instructions or could even post pictures of how thier brackets are mounted I would appreciate it.

Here ya go....you might need longer bolts.

If you don't have them..get yourself some of these ball-end allan keys.

I find it easier to mount the brackets first..and then mount the screen.

Also..you must have a touring screen because the sports shield/screen only has the lower mounts....I think.

The sport screen uses the same supports as the touring screen. The big ones at the top that attach to the 'hard to reach' spot under the triple tree and the lower, smaller ones that attach to the inside of the turn signal stalk... the turn signal must come off to get the supporting bracket in there behind it. Then the windshield lower support attaches to that bracket piece.

If you need directions, I have a sanned copy somewhere here. PM me with an email address and I'll shoot it to you.

Thanks for the reply. I do believe that I have the sport shield. I don't know how to post pictures, but here is a link to the item on the Sierra BMW site. Hope it works.

It has two sets of mounts. One high and one low. The high ones are mounted like the ones in your picture. I have the longer bolts. Those I had figured. The others are lower and look like they wrap around the plastic pieces on either side of the headlight. They have a plate with two holes on the end, but I can't see any existing screws that these would connect to. [/img]

Got what I needed from Boxer.

It appears I am missing a couple of parts. Brackets to be exact that mount to the turn signals.

I'll try contacting the guy I bought it off of and see if he has the parts, but I may end up buying a whole mounting kit.

Thanks for the help.

Since the upper bolts are a real pain to get to, even with a short ball Allen wrench, you might do what I did - go to a nuts and bolts store and buy the same threaded bolts with a hex head. Still not exactly easy but much better to get on and off.

I switch from the speedster shield to the sport shield every fall, so I have put them together a few times!

Great idea!

I am getting ready to remove my always-working-the-wellnuts-loose touring screen and replace it with the Tall 380mm Windshield.

I have been unable to get the 6mmhex bolts loose and I am about to go after them with a pliers (taht's desparate!). The hex bolt is a terrific thought. How's that working for you?

I have made the transition a few times since I changed the bolts and it works much better for me. Still not easy but better. I have seen some flexible headed wrenches at Sears and thought to give one of those a try. Might make it even easier!

I don't think that works for the Sport screen.

Bob is correct. Sport and touring shield use the same mounts. The flyscreen has different brackets and the bolts are a different length.

Do you recall the head size of the bolts that you switched to? 8mm? 10mm?
getting any wrench in there will be tight

Thanks

Bolt head size on mine is 13mm. Yes, it is tight! Tiny turns! But better than the Allen wrench! I am going to try some of those shiny new racheting box wrenches or flexible head wrenches I saw at Sears this weekend! :)

ha ha ... I am a sucker for stuff like that. I just bought some racheting box wrenches at BJ's wholesale club. I believe it was my wife's fault for sending me to get groceries.

13mm. hmmm.

I tried to fit a 10 or 11 around the allen head and it wouldn't clear the bracket.

I did check on my flyscreen but they take the same bolt and I have changed them out a few times. Pretty sure it will work.
