Actually dependent upon just exactly how ROUGH the road is and how fast you wish to travel!
If it is just a regular packed dirt fire type road, try it on a regular solo setting first.

Re: Recovering Jap Rider, my 1st Beemer, 1996 R1100R
Enjoy your bike :) ! As far as the steering damper, I wouldn't worry about it too much, here is a thread about the steering damper from BMWST. http://bmwsporttouring.com/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=703334 I would just live with it as it is until you can find a cheap replacement...

The rear brake isn't that powerful but you should be able to activate the ABSII system by honking on them around 25/30mph. BTW - The front brake does 90 percent of all the work...... Vibration could be just the old Boxer thing.....motor likes it best around 3/3.5k rpm's. You will get the "boxer...

Spiegler Brake Lines
Has anyone fitted the Spiegler brake line kit S-BM0115 on their R1100R's?
Would appreciate any insight or "gotcha's" regarding the installation on my 2000 R1100R with ABS.
Many thanks

Re: R850R sometimes running on 1 leg
One wet weather issue is definitely your HES wiring, which is under the alternator belt and is a known fault on early oilheads. The covering of the wiring disintegrates and can short out causing timing problems. Plus, as someone else said, your plug wiring or plugs could also be an issue.

Re: fuel mileage?
Ok, I regularly get 40 to 47mpg. 40 when I'm REALLY thrashing it. Around here we have 70/75/80 and 85 mph speed limits :) !!!! First thing I would do would be to give it a good tune-up. When was the last time your air filter or fuel filter were changed? If you don't know, replace them. At the age of...

Boxer motor "sweet spot" is around 3500 rpm's and up.........and you can run them like a raped ape upto redline and it won't hurt 'em :) !! BTW - Do NOT lug a boxer motor.....they don't like to run under 3k. They are torquey and will pull from there but changing down and bringing her up to...

Because the job is such a PITA, you should buy a whole new clutch unit together with shaft seals. Don't forget to use the appropriate lube on your splines too!!!

I installed Big Mak tank bags on both my R1150Rt and R1100R. Just flip them up and fuel up.....easy to remove.

Hey Oliver! That picture took me back many years when I used to go with my father to motorcycle speedway back in the U.K.! West Ham was my local track....I always remembered the great smell of the Fuel/Castrol R mixture :) ! FYI - I used to race a Norton Manx in the 60's. Wished I still had it.........

Hi Oliver, Sorry I took so long...life has been a little hectic! Yes, I get mine here http://www.jmhmotorsport.com/index.php?page=shop.browse&category_id=30&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=26 . Our side road construction is VERY different than that in Germany. A lot of our roads are "c...

Oliver, Nice looking bike mate =D> I see some of the various mods on your R1100R and am interested in how you did them. Couple of questions if you don't mind me asking. Wheels : How did you modify the bike to fit the R1150R front and, more importanly, swap the 18" for the 17" rear wheel..w...

Re: Headlight glass replacement??.
Received the headlight glass and gasket for $45 shipped from Chicago BMW. Replacement is a breeze....the reflector and glass are two parts which are held to the chrome rim by 8 spring clips. The JMH Headlight saver really saved the bulb and reflector, so put a new one on the new glass. The headlight...

Re: Low fuel warning light question
I average around 42mpg. As high as 48 and as low as 38 when thrashing around. Yesterday, the low fuel light came on at 158 miles and ended up with 178 miles showing when I filled up and put 4.16 gallons of 93 in the tank. This meant that the warning light came on with around 1 gallon left in the tan...

Re: 1997r1100rs
Oliver, My 2000 R1100R only had 10400 miles on it when my HES went out. The Valeo starter failed at 9400 miles. I was not suggesting that he replace them, only that he should be aware of the issues/problems that could occur with the 1100 motors of that age. Yes, a good service including trans, FD an...

I bought a 2000 R1100R with 6700 miles that was stored for 3 years and infrequently ridden before it was stored. I did a full 6k tune up (TBS, Valve adjust, engine oil and filter change) with new tranny and FD fluids (75w140 Mobil1 Tranny and 75w90 Mobil1 FD) and also replaced the air filter, batter...

Headlight glass replacement??.
Has anyone replaced their glass?
Mine got hit by a rock today (a bloody big one!) and it broke the glass, even through the headlight protector!
New glass is priced like unobtanium and I wondered if anyone used the replacements available on Ebay or something similar?
Thanks

Could well be a stick coil issue with the secondary plugs!
