Re: Black Cannister?

Somehow, my black canister got loose of the bracket it rests on and was hanging freely next to my rear tire. No idea how it came loose. After a 40 mile highway trip I smelled rubber burning when I got off the bike. The can had been rubbing against the tire and black rubber shavings were all over my ...

R1150R VS K1200R Spec questions Expert help needed

I need to know some things. A friend of mine wrecked his R1150R and bought a new K1200R. It is massively more powerful than the R. What is it that gives the K so much more horsepower and torque with only about 50cc more displacement? My limited knowledge of engine design prohibits my understanding. ...

Different front and rear tires?

I heard a guy mention that it is a good idea to put a soft tire on the front and a longer wear tire on the back. That way they probably will both wear out at the same time. Usually you will go through 2 rear tires for every one front if they are the same grade. Anybody do this?

Synthetic oil or not? Brand name suggestions?

My 04 R1150R has 2500 miles. My service guy said they don't use synthetic oil on my type of bike until after 12,000 miles? Is this commonly accepted? Will using synthetic oil before "break in" be a bad thing? Is 12K the standard break in period? I plan on doing my own fluid changes in the ...

What Kind of Brake fluid to use?

I have a 2004 R1150R with 2,400 miles. I'm taking a motorcycle repair class at a local college and I need to pick up some supplies. It's a very hands on class and we'll be learning how to do some general repairs and maintenance. I'm sure some of the motorheads on this site will be the most reliable ...

It wasn't a Battery Problem HELP!

I posted a few days ago regarding what I thought was a battery problem. The original battery in the bike seemed weak. I put a new gel battery in 3 weeks ago and I was unable to start my bike tho other day. It sounded like there was not enough juice to turn the bike over. I fully charged the battery ...

Battery Problem

I was having problems with my battery in the winter months, it had barely enough juice to turn over after 1 failed start attempt. I had my battery tender on all the time, but it always felt weak when I started it. I just had a new gel battery installed 3 wks ago and I went on a 55 mile trip last wee...

NYC Area Maintenance

I will have a pro service my bike for now as I am not set up to do any work myself. Does anyone have any recommendations where I can get reliable service within vicinity of Manhattan? BMW of Manhattan is the only place I'm familiar with, but I'm not inclined to use a dealer for service.

Oil Changes, Calendar or Odometer?

I won't be using my bike much more until the Spring so it is garaged for a while. I have had it for a little over 1 yr and have not had any service whatsoever. I bought it in Jan. 2006 with 900 miles and the previous owner had full service on it at 600 miles. There are 2100 miles on it now which mea...

Hey joejeweler, I am similar in stature to you and I also have the Corbin seat. I switched back to the original though. The Corbin seat raises you up about an inch and it is a little wider. The Corbin does provide more comfort for long hauls. I mostly make shorter trips so I don't mind. You will be ...

Some excellent insights from everybody. Hey DJ what is that engine you posted? With regard to the aesthetics of the boxer, my untrained eye when I first saw it was that it looked awkward. People unfamiliar with it ask me questions when they see it. "Why is it sticking out like that?" "...

Boxer Engine Is it the perfect motorcycle engine?

I did a lot of studying before I bought my 04 R1150R. I chose this bike mainly because of the engine. I'm not a real hands on mechanic, but I am an enthusiast for all things mechanical. When I thought about all the pros and cons it seemed clear to me that a boxer flat twin has advantages over a V tw...

Thanks to all for the good advice

I am a relatively new motorcyclist, only had my bike for 1 1/2 yrs. I always heard bikers were a special breed, kind of a brotherhood. I think BMW owners are probably an even better class of people than the average biker (definitely a better class of people than the average citizen). The information...

Battery issues and using grip warmers

I have put about 1000 miles on my 2004 r1150r. It had 900 when I bought it. Since the weather has gotten cool here in NYC I have used the heated grips the last few times I rode. The problem is, my battery seems very weak when I go to restart the engine. I had to wait a few times between starter pres...

I put the bolts to the grinder to shave down the length, about 1 mm or so, but more to narrow the head. I ground them to about 1mm of material surrounding the hex socket of the bolt. It allowed me to hold the bolt straight into the threads. They were at an angle before being ground down. I considere...

Thanks for responding. I do not have the screen attached to the bracket. The bracket itself makes it hard enough to get the bolt aligned straight into the hole. I have been using the small allan wrench that came with the tool kit. The problem is, I can't even get the long bolt treaded into the top h...

Speedster Windshield Installation frustration. Help Anyone?

I tried for about an hour to thread the long hex bolt that comes with the Speedster windshield with no success. The short bolts that are on the bike clear the black headlight bracket, but the bracket bows out at about the point of the head of the longer hex bolts. I cannot get the proper angle to st...
